The Conference on Normal Tissue Radiation Effects and Countermeasures (CONTREC), in partnership with the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Division of Radiation Health, will address three topics in the field of radiation injury: side effects of radiation during and after cancer therapy; radiological and nuclear emergencies; and exposure to radiation in space. CONTREC will bring together top national and international researchers to share their work, while also showcasing the groundbreaking work at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Division of Radiation Health. By integrating the resources and expertise of the University of Arkansas System with the legacy and ideas of Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller, the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute and member of the International Association of Conference Centers creates an atmosphere where collaboration and change can thrive.

Dr. Marc Benderitter is the head of the Department of Radiobiology and Regenerative Medicine in IRSN, France. His group is interested in identifying the mechanism of severe tissue radiation effects (radiotherapy side effects and accidental exposure) and develops medical countermeasure mainly based on stem cell therapy. He is chairman of the International Association of Radiopathology (IAR), and expert for the IAEA in case of Radiation Emergency Medical Response and Assistance.
DAVID KIRSCH, MD, PHD

David Kirsch, MD, PhD, is the Barbara Levine University professor at Duke University in the Departments of Radiation Oncology and Pharmacology & Cancer Biology. After graduating from Duke with a BS in biology, he completed the MD/PhD program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He is the leader of the Radiation Oncology & Imaging Program in the Duke Cancer Institute and serves as vice chair for basic and translational research in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
