Champion Trees Exhibit

Colored pencil artwork by Linda Williams Palmer

June 3, 2016 · 2:00 PM – Aug 31, 2016 · 5:00 PM

We were pleased and excited to host Linda Williams Palmer’s Champion Tree exhibit here at the Institute from June 3 through the end of August, 2016.

The Champion Trees of Arkansas represent the largest of each species of tree in the Natural State. Measured and verified by the Arkansas Forestry Commission, the Champion Trees represent all corners of the state, growing in diverse locations and environments. The uniqueness and rich history of the 123 Champion Trees identified so far led Arkansas artist Palmer on a journey to visit the trees in person and capture there essence on canvas.

Palmer’s renderings of the Champion Trees of Arkansas in colored pencil have travelled around Arkansas to much acclaim and her journey was chronicled in the award-winning documentary Champion Trees, produced by the Arkansas Educational Television Network. Every tree captured in Palmer’s art tells a story and invites reflection on what has happened in the state during the tree’s lifetime. Palmer treats each tree as an individual, capturing not only the scale of the Champions, but also the unique personality of each tree and the seasonal mood when she visited each site.
